About Us

Jazz Club was started by a handful of Gustavus Jazz students who wanted to build the jazz community, grow in their own knowledge, and provide access and resources to other Gustavus students to aid in their jazz education. Despite beginning as an almost completely virtual club due to the pandemic, JClub has endured and grown as a community.

What do we do?

Jazz Club hosts a variety of different events such as listening parties, jam sessions, and more!

Listening Parties |  Listening parties are just that - we listen to jazz and talk about it! Sometimes these events are more structured and educational and others are more laid back. Every listening party involves a good time (and sometimes food!)

Jam Sessions | Jam Sessions are events where we can get together in small combos and just play! These events are a great place to come if you are looking to get more improv experience and play in a smaller ensemble setting. You don't need any combo or improv experience, just a willingness to learn! We support one another no matter what our comfort level is.

Master Classes | Master classes bring in experts and more experienced musicians to talk to us about jazz. In the past we've had GAC alumni talk about playing in a combo and current club members talk about the basics of improv. We hope to host many more master classes on topics such as jazz composition, jazz theory, and jazz in the classroom.

Collabs | We try to collaborate with other student organizations in order to broaden our perspectives and gain new experiences. We often will collaborate with FMEA (Future Music Educators Association) to talk about jazz and how it works in the music classroom.
